William Nicholson, son of William and Elizabeth (Burgess) Nicholson and brother of Joseph Nicholson, was born in Annapolis, Maryland, December 28, 1704. After being educated in England in his father's family, he returned to America and was a merchant of Annapolis, succeeding to his father's business and becoming a man of large property interests. He married Elizabeth Beale, daughter of John Beale. His only child was Beale Nicholson, who was born 1730 and died in 1763, unmarried. William Nicholson died in 1733, his will being dated December 28, 1731 and approved March 2, 1733. Although the Nicholson family originated from Berwick-Upon-Tweed, England, the Nicholson family in Maryland often referred to their ancestry as Scottish. Berwick-Upon-Tweed is on the English side of the River Tweed which forms the border between England and Scotland in this region. However, the border has moved back and forth many times with Berwick being in Scotland during various periods. Therefore, it is interesting to note the references to Scotland and the Establish Church of Scotland in William Nicholson's will (attached in appendix) which tend to substantiate the claim of Scottish ancestry of Nicholson family in Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
